The Ugandan Tragedy - BOSCO Uganda Relief Project

Extra! News Flash - BOSCO Phase I Sucessfully Deployed - Details available on our News and Media Page!

There is a horrible war going on in Uganda that United Nations High Commissioner Jan England very appropriately labeled "the World's Most Forgotten Humanitarian disaster." This war has been going on for 20 years and yet we in the United States almost never hear of it. There are approximately 146 violent deaths per week in Northern Uganda, which is three times the death rate we are seeing in Iraq." We hear of the Iraqi war everyday, which too is very saddening, yet we hardly hear about the situation in Northern Uganda. Between 1994 and 2002, 25,000 children have been abducted, brainwashed, and forced to be soldiers in this atrocious war. Many of them have been forced to kill their own parents as part of the desensitization process.

This war needs a voice » OXFAM:Stories from the IDP Camps

We have done extensive research and -- along with a few partners -- have developed a plan to provide internet access and Voice Over IP Telephone access in 20 of 53 of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Gulu, Northern Uganda. These camps were developed with the intent to provide safety in numbers, but the conditions in these camps are inhumane. BOSCO Wi-Fi array at Pabbo IDP camp serves 80,000 people with internet access, VoIP international phone service, and educational and economic opportunity!Sadly, 95% of the people in this area are living in absolute poverty and are unable to tap the vast natural resources of the area. Currently, 2 million people are living (and starving) in these IDP camps in the provinces of Gulu, Kitgum, and Pader. The goal of this project, code named BOSCO: Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach, is to give these forgotten children a voice. This technology will link these people to the outside world and allow them to become their own advocates.

We often have struggled with how we can make a difference in this world, perhaps you have too.

We see some of the pamphlets and literature that are sent out by various relief organizations, which show all the poverty in the world, and live each day with the awareness of all the good fortune and financial wealth we have in our country. We know we have a nice house, two vans and all the food we need, yet struggle with the fact that in other parts of the developing world, over 1.2 billion people (18.5% of the world's population) live on less than $1 a day.

But, what, -- we wonder -- can we do to make a difference? Considering all of our family and work obligations, we can't just uproot ourselves and move to the Third World to try to do something "hands on". Through the BOSCO Uganda Project, we think we've stumbled upon a way that can help at least a little. We think we've found a simple, relatively inexpensive way to make a difference in the world.
